What is your philosophy for your business?
Our Philosophy at Knot Too Shabby Events is to build strong relationships with the every couple as well as their parents from the beginning and listen to their vision for the wedding day. Ultimately, we want to do everything possible to make their wedding day all that they imagined it to be and more.
How did you get started?
I was always the one planning parties for my friends ever since elementary school. After I graduated from college, I moved back to Wilmington and kind of fell into the job as the Event Manager at The RiverRoom. I continued to work there for over three years as I found my place within the Wilmington Wedding industry. I loved getting to know all of the brides and vendors. I developed professional yet personal relationships with the brides and they started asking me to help plan their RiverRoom weddings. After a handful of successful coordination jobs, I realized I had a natural knack for it and wanted to find a way to sell my services and show off my profile. I launched Knot Too Shabby Events in January 2014 as I continued to work at the event space and grow my own business. Before long, Knot Too Shabby Events needed more time than I could give it working two jobs so I decided to dedicate myself full time in May 2015. Since then, we’ve doubled how many weddings we did last year and we look forward to many more years of successful Knot Too Shabby Events weddings.
Why did you choose to be a part of the wedding industry?
I have been in the restaurant industry my entire life. When I started at The RiverRoom, I already had a good handle on fast-paced, demanding, and stressful environments. I love the wedding industry so much, and I can’t picture myself anywhere else. My sister is also a successful wedding planner in the mountains and we are always troubleshooting scenarios, sharing tips, and brainstorming on ways to achieve our client’s vision for their wedding day. I truly have a passion as a planner. I absolutely love the vendors, I am blessed to work with and communicate with them throughout the process to bring them into the fold so they understand exactly what the overall picture is for the wedding day. Hopefully that shows when the big day arrives and the bride and groom, and all the parties involved, can have a completely stress-free day and enjoy every single minute of it.
What areas do you serve, are you willing to travel?
We are based in Wilmington and serve all the surrounding areas: Topsail, Hampstead, Ocean Isle, and Southport/Oak Island. However, we will travel anywhere the client wants to work with us. We love exploring new places and taking on new venues every opportunity that we get.
How many weddings per week does your business typically accommodate?
We normally try and keep it to between one and two weddings per week so we can dedicate an ample amount of time to each of our clients. We want to ensure the best possible outcome for each and every event.
What do you feel sets you apart from your competitors?
Our main priority is to exceed our client’s expectations in every aspect of their wedding. We like to listen to the needs and ideas of each client and give our professional opinion when needed. We use our organization skills and attention to detail in order to enhance our services. Instead of creating a vision for our clients, we make their visions come to life. I have an amazing staff that helps me turn the brides’ dreams into reality. We strive to find common ground with every client and understand where they are coming from and why they want their wedding to be a certain way.
Is there a particular wedding that has moved or inspired you?
I had a close friend get married two years ago. The planning process was very stressful so they decided to take a twist on their wedding. They planned a beautiful backyard engagement party that was actually a surprise wedding! Only the parents of the couple and I knew about it. All of the guests were awestruck and amazed. Their wedding turned out to be one of the most fun, stress-free and beautiful weddings I have ever been a part of.
Is there a particular time where your participation has prevented disaster or made the event particularly magical?
Every time. We make sure there is a backup plan and “emergency” tool kit for everything that could possibly go wrong.
Do you have any advice for couples in the midst of planning?
Hire a planner and not a family friend. There are many things that your planner will do for you on your wedding date that a family friend cannot do. Your once-in-a lifetime day will be great times, special moments, and happy memories to look back on without the stress. Again, we have a fantastic group of vendors to choose from… photographers, caterers, rental companies, entertainment, and flowers that we can help you find the best fit, depending on the “look” you are after and your budget.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever received and why has it stuck with you?
My grandmother has a saying that my family repeats often – “The world is at the tip of your tongue.” This one piece of advice has gotten me where I am today and made me an even better planner. You never know what someone may say unless you ask so I always ask for what my client wants.
