One of the greatest benefits of having your wedding in a coastal town is the venue selection. The River Room encompasses many of the beloved parts of Wilmington in one venue – the river, the historic downtown, and a combined wedding and reception location. We talked with Shannon Zucker, the venue manager, about why choosing The River Room could be the best choice for your wedding.
How did you get started?
I got started in the events industry though an internship my senior year at UNCW. I had the opportunity to intern at an events venue in Wilmington and loved it! Thanks to that internship, I discovered my passion for working at wedding venues. Now I manage The RiverRoom and our new bridal suite, Sunset Flat.
Why did you choose to be a part of the wedding industry?
Well, who doesn’t love a great wedding? I chose to be a part of the wedding industry because I love being able to help make someone’s monumental day as great as possible. I have the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations whereas others may not which is a necessary quality to have when a bride is nervous and stressed.
What areas do you serve?
We are located in downtown Wilmington; however, we have clients who travel from the triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) as well as from abroad! Most recently, we had clients from England who traveled to The RiverRoom for their ceremony and reception.
How many weddings per week does your business typically accommodate?
We offer events seven days a week and we can accommodate up to two events a day when the room isn’t rented out all day. Typically, we have two weddings a week in addition to other non-wedding events.
What do you feel sets you apart from your competitors?
Something that sets us apart from our competitors is that we are right on the Cape Fear River! We get the most beautiful sunset views and we are in the process of getting a walkway above the water. Another thing that sets us apart is that we allow our clients to bring their own food and beverages which is not something that many venues will allow. In addition to those things, we recently opened Sunset Flat which is a smaller, second venue that can be used as a bridal suite!
Is there a particular wedding that has moved or inspired you?
Weddings always inspire me! To see two people who are so happy together is an amazing thing. I find the most moving moments are during the first dance when the pre-wedding jitters have left and you can see how happy the couple is as they look into each other’s eyes.
Is there a particular time where your participation has prevented disaster or made the event particularly magical?
Yes! Earlier in the month, during a ceremony, a client’s wedding band fell through a crack into the water below and I was able to retrieve the ring. It would have been awful if the clients lost their ring and by quick-thinking, I was able to get the ring out of the river and back on the bride’s finger! The whole family was very appreciative and it’s something neither the clients nor I will forget.
Do you have any advice for couples in the midst of planning?
My advice to couples in the midst of planning would be to find a venue that they can envision themselves getting married in and then ask the venue for advice on how to make their vision come to life. As a venue, we have seen many different events and can provide them with lots of suggestions.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever received and why has it stuck with you?
The greatest piece of advice that I received was to do what makes you happy. I can’t imagine waking up and going to a job I hated. However, the first thing that came to my mind was a quote by Conan O’Brien that I have framed on my desk. It reads, “If you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”
