A Style Me Pretty Little Black Book member, a Professional Photographers of America member AND a Wedding Photojournalist Association member, Bella Rose photography is obviously a top choice for a photographer!
Lauren: “What is your philosophy for your business?”
Lisa: “I specialize in high quality wedding photography, engagement sessions, bridal portraits and boudoir photography. I offer beautiful, custom designed albums, canvases and prints as well.
L: “How did you get started?”
Lisa: “I have a BFA degree in design with an emphasis on illustration. I painted realistic oil paintings from photos and eventually I had so many requests for the photos I had taken, I switched to being a full time photographer. I trained with another photographer for several years to learn the business and then opened my own business and booked 30 weddings the first year. Fifteen years later, and I am still enjoying every minute!”
L: “Why do you enjoy catering to the wedding industry?”
Lisa: “I think it takes a certain personality to thrive in the wedding business. I personally love the artistic challenge that each wedding requires and I love my couples, and their families. It’s an intense, emotional experience that has so much beauty. I feel it’s an honor to be chosen to document each bride’s day. i am essentially ‘their eyes’ for the most important day of their lives, and it’s an awesome responsibility to be able to give them the gift of remembering their special day.”
L: “How did you get started?”
Lisa: “I started my business here in 2005. I am originally from California and worked the first 5 years of my career in the Sacramento area. My father transferred to Wilmington with his work, so we all moved to the East Coast.”
L: “What areas do you serve? Are you willing to travel?”
Lisa: “I am primarily in the Wilmington area, but have also photographed extensively in Raleigh as well. I enjoy destination weddings and recently traveled to Maui for an incredible wedding. Anyone want to go to Europe? :)”
L: “How many weddings per week does your business typically accommodate?”
Lisa: “I like to focus on one wedding per week. Your wedding day is exclusively yours, so I am there whenever you need me and for as long as I need to be.”
L: “What about you do you feel sets you apart from your peers?”
Lisa: “My style comes from my design background, and I like to think of each image as an individual painting or work of art. I also photograph from a romantic point of view, and I always have a storyline in my mind as I’m working. Another difference is the post-production work that I do. I’ve had 20 years of Photoshop experience and I am able to apply my oil painting skills to create beautiful retouching that doesn’t look fake or overdone. I also eliminate things like exit signs, electrical outlets or extra people in the background on the beach, etc. to make each image as perfect as possible before the bride and groom see their images.”
L: “Is there a particular wedding that has moved or inspired you?”
Lisa: “There have been so many! I think that the importance of photography really hits home when you realize that the photos not only document a wedding, but they are also a part of a family’s history. I had a wedding where the father of the bride was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The bride moved her wedding date up to make sure that he could attend. He was able to walk her down the aisle and dance a first dance with the bride, and the bride’s younger sister who was not engaged, but also wanted to share a first dance with him as well. It’s moments like that, that make me realize how priceless photos really are and makes me love my even more.”
L: “Is there a particular time where your participation has prevented disaster or made the event particularly magical?
Lisa: “I try to help in small ways whenever I can to make the day run as smoothly as possible. I’ve tied many flower girl bows, helped lace the bride in her dress, made sure the veil is in correctly, pinned boutonnieres, calmed frazzled nerves, been a friend, confidant and support to the couple throughout the whole process. I think I feel most satisfied when the bridal party talks about how much fun they had taking photos and when the bride goes out of her way to hug and thank me before she leaves for her honeymoon. I love tomake the magic happen! “
L: “Do you have any advice for couples in the midst of planning?”
Lisa: “I think couples can really gain a lot of knowledge from asking their photographers for advice along the way. I have experience with all of the vendors, I can give tips for scheduling the timing of the day, and a variety of other details because we see it all- what works, what doesn’t and the best way to handle certain things.”
