An Ohio native, Megan moved to North Carolina two days after graduating college. The charm and culture of the south drew her in, like it always does, and she didn’t look back. Without surprise, she fell in love with a southerner, her now husband, Ken. Since their story began in Wilmington, it was without question that they would have their wedding here as well.
They wanted to incorporate as many southern details and traditions as possible. For example, she designed their centerpieces with burlap vases, had an “I Do BBQ” instead of a traditional bridal shower with all the fixins’ (yes, that includes green beans and macaroni and cheese!!), and their guestbook was a wooden sign outlined as the state of North Carolina with a pink heart over Wilmington. Being a North Carolina native and having a love for doughnuts, the Groom’s cake was a tower of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, ironically on National Doughnut Day!
Wilmington has that small-town southern charm and ocean views – they knew their guests would fall in love with it just like they had years ago.
Kaity: How did you and your husband meet?
Megan: When I moved from Charlotte to Wilmington, I moved right above Ken in the apartment complex we were living in at the time. The first time I saw him, I knew he was the one. It took a few friendly interactions before he asked me out and we have been inseparable ever since!
Kaity: How did he propose?
Megan: We spend a lot of time running, riding our bikes, and hanging out around Wrightsville Beach. One day, we rode our bikes down to Wrightsville Beach at Access 9, which is the same place he first told me he loved me, and Ken asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.
Kaity: Where did you get the ideas for your wedding, what inspired your day?
Megan: I began collecting ideas and inspiration over 15 years ago when I worked for a catering and banquet center where I was given the opportunity to work hundreds of wedding receptions and events. Being able to see many different venues, color schemes, and details of countless weddings gave me inspiration for my own wedding.
Kaity: What was the most memorable part?
Megan: A few weeks prior to our wedding, Ken snuck away to a recording studio and recorded a song he wrote just for us. When it came to our first dance, I was so surprised as were our guests. I don’t think there was a dry eye! Ken has always played the guitar but this truly blew me away! Later in the night, he brought out his guitar and him and his groomsmen serenaded me with a live version.
Kaity: Tell me about your wedding dress mishap.
Megan: I thought I had found the perfect dress. It needed alterations so I took it in somewhere and found out less than two weeks prior to my wedding that it wasn’t going to be ready. Panicked, I called The Wedding Dress Shoppe and asked them to help me! I went in on a Tuesday with my soon to be mother-in-law the week before my wedding and I found a dress! The women were so helpful and turned an experience that started off stressful into truly one of my favorite moments of my wedding – finding my dress! It needed alterations and The Wedding Dress Shoppe still had it done in time for my wedding…and it fit perfectly!
Kaity: What are your plans as newlyweds?
Megan: We are looking forward to spending time together with our daughter, settling in our home, and enjoying life together!
Congratulations Ken and Megan, we wish you both the most happiness!
